5 Ways to save money now!

As good it is to replace low efficient components with high efficient ones there can be some things that you can do RIGHT NOW. You can save some money while saving the earth at the same time. Here are some tips that you can do while you save up for the home renovations you need.

1. Turn Down the heat.
Setting the thermostat down when you leave your home during the day can save a lot the natural gas and electricity that you use in a year. If you want, you can go as far keeping your home at 15 degrees 24/7 and wear extra clothing, but we have furnaces for comfort. There is no need to make your home a fridge.

2. Pay less for water.
Shower instead of daily baths. Turn the tap off while you brush. You can't rinse that brush while it's in your mouth. If you brush your teeth for 1 -2 minutes you would waist up to 4 liters of water. By just rinsing the brush (approx 3 times in 2 minutes) you would only use only 1 cup (250 ml) of water.

3. Switch to CFL.
We not talking football here. Condensed Florescent Light bulbs are a great way to cut your electricity bill. Remember that even though you are saving money, you still need to turn off the lights when you leave a room.

4. Unplug.
Are there small appliances or unused TV and stereos in your home. Even when they are turned “off” they still constantly draw current. If you have ever seen a old TV (built 1985 and back) you may remember the warm up time required. By constantly drawing current we no longer have to wait for our entertainment. Don't let a unused convenience cost you money.

5. Plug up.
Unwanted drafts are never good. For this tip your going to have to spend some money. Depending on the size of your home you can expect to spend around $100 for materials.

Get a few cans of spray foam. There are three types:

  • High expansion (great for basement gaps between the foundation and the main floor)
  • Mid expansion (usually this is marked `Windows and DOORS`)
  • Low expansion (used for around delicate areas like plumbing)

Ask your local hardware store about what type suits your need. Also get the see through film installed around your windows in winter time will make your home more comfortable and keep your wallet fatter.
