Home Renovation Tax Credits

Ok, so you know you have to renovate your house and that somewhere the government is providing cash back. But where do you start and how do you get that cash into your pocket? Eco Renos will help you feel a little easier about the process. Here is your check list.

Step One
Call Eco Renos. Our representatives will advise you over the phone and set up an assessment to identify upgrades and renovations that apply to available government programs. Sometimes it may be cheaper to simply replace a component rather than paying for an audit and then wait for the rebate. In most cases you want the audit done before the renovations begin. Let us help you figure that out.

Step Two
Call a licensed Energy Auditor. We recommend Edmonton Property Inspectors but there are other reliable companies that do a good job.

Step Three
Pre-Retrofit Audit is done. Most auditors are booking 2 – 4 weeks out. The cost is $200 but the Alberta Government refunds this after you have completed your renovations.

Step Four
Get the project started. Eco Renos will work with you over the 18 months you have to finish. The current ecoACTION Initiative through the Government of Canada expires March 31, 2011. All renovations should be completed before this date to take advantage of the money offered. Remember you don't need to do all the retrofits at the same time. You can spread the budget and projects over the 18 months.

Step 5
Post-Retrofit Audit is done. This is a duplicate of the pre audit. The licensed auditor will determine what renovations were completed and asses the increased efficiency of your home. Based on this, the auditor submits the application to the Federal government. They will also provide a report to you that you use to submit to the Alberta Government.

Step 6
GET YOUR CASH BACK! Cheques are usually received 90 days (3 months) after the application is received.
